Emotions, emotions and more emotions.


One of the most famous computational models of emotion is the OCC (Ortony, Clore, and Collins) model.


Developed in 1988 by psychologists Andrew Ortony, Gerald Clore, and Allan Collins, the OCC model is a widely used framework for representing and reasoning about emotions in artificial intelligence systems.


The OCC model proposes that emotions arise from the way people interpret events in relation to their goals, standards, and attitudes. It defines 22 emotion types that are triggered by the appraisal of situations along these dimensions. For example, joy is elicited by an event that is appraised as desirable, while distress is caused by an undesirable event.


The OCC model has been influential in affective computing because it provides a structured way to computationally represent and reason about emotions. Many affective computing systems, such as virtual agents and robots, use variants of the OCC model to generate emotional responses.


The model has also been used to develop computational theories of emotion and to guide the design of emotion recognition systems.


While the OCC model has been widely adopted, it has also been critiqued for oversimplifying the complexity of human emotions and for not accounting for the role of physiological and social factors in emotion generation.


Nevertheless, it remains one of the most prominent computational models of emotion and a key foundation of affective computing research.
